CLEs That Can Make Your Life Better
Believe it or not, despite their reputation, there’s a treasure trove of insightful and impactful CLEs out there!
To all my fellow lawyers in Florida, I have to give a big shout out @Florida Bar and their @Legal Fuel podcast – the content is gold. And for those outside of the Sunshine State, the content is completely free and well worth a listen (plus, who knows, maybe you can even submit it for credit).
As you might have surmised, my CLE deadline just wrapped up and I found some truly engaging content that goes beyond reciting recent case law (though we need that too) but can help us become better humans. We’re all too familiar with the sobering mental health statistics within our profession. That’s why initiatives like these led by the state bars (like Florida) are so valuable – they equip us with practical tools to navigate our roles with resilience and mental strength.
Here were some of my favorites:
- To stretch your belief about what is possible and learn about the measurable results of new models that could apply in the legal profession: 4 Day Workweek
- To shift what you think of stress: Harnessing the Power of Stress; Developing Grit and a Growth Mindset
- To deepen your understanding of the outsized prevalence of ADHD in the legal profession (3x the prevalence in the legal profession)
- To learn about Mental Health First Aid and be a better colleague (had never heard of Mental Health First Aid but so glad I have now)
A common thread found in these CLEs that certainly caught my ear: the billable hour business model is detrimental to well-being.
Other CLEs that I listened to over the past few weeks and highly recommend are:
- Listen to @Jessica Medina to get a grip on your finances so they start to serve you in Balancing the Lawyer Budget: A Values-Based Approach to a Balanced Life
- Hear from @Olivia Vizachero to do the deep mindset work to discover – and rethink – what is holding you back in How to Thrive as a Lawyer: Overcoming People-Pleasing, Perfectionism and Procrastination
- And of course I HIGHLY recommend learning from me and Whitney on the Breaking up the with the Billable Hour CLE. Wild that we did that over a year and a half ago and have learned so much since then, but we want you to know this: your pricing can be radically aligned with the goals of your client and the experience of radical alignment changes everything.
